New Publishing Opportunity

Public Services Quarterly's column, "Future Voices in Public Services," is a forum for students in graduate library and information science programs to discuss key issues they see in academic library public services, to envision what they feel librarians in public service have to offer to academia, to tell of their visions for the profession, or to tell of research that is going on in library schools.  The goal of this forum is to provide fresh perspectives from those entering our field, in both the U.S. and other countries.

Interested students of graduate LIS programs should contact Miriam Matteson, "Future Voices" column editor, at mmattes1@kent.edu for more information.  Please note that students must be interested in ACADEMIC librarianship.

SO MUCH MONEY!

If you need a bit of financial help to get through your graduate program, scholarship funds are now available.  The American Library Association (ALA) has more than $300,000 available to students who are studying in library science or school library media programs at the master's degree level.  Get your application in early.  The deadline to apply is March 1, 2017.
Scholarships range from $1,500 to $7,000 per student per year.  They include scholarships for students who are interested in Children's Librarianship, Youth Librarianship, Federal Librarianship, new media and Library Automation.  In addition, there are also scholarships available for minorities, persons with disabilities and people who are already employed in libraries but do not have an MLS.
To be considered for one of these scholarships, applicants must attend a master’s level program in library and information science that has been accredited by the ALA.  Take a look at the application and instructions and get started working on your application now.

Independent Study & Practicum Opportunities

The Missouri Hub (MOHub) is a collaboration between Missouri cultural heritage organizations that promotes Missouri's digital content to the world through the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).  Because it is still early in development, MOHub seeks one or two library science students to work with the MOHub communications group to develop a communications and marketing strategy that can grow with the organization.  The work will be virtual via Skype, conference calls, and email, with occasional face-to-face meetings in St. Louis or a central location in the state.

If interested or if you have questions, contact Chris Freeland at chris.freeland@wustl.edu.  For questions regarding an Independent Study, contact Karen Robinson at robinsonkar@missouri.edu.  If you wish to pursue this as your practicum opportunity, consult your practicum director for additional guidance.
